What is Acupuncture and
How Does It Work?
The nervous system
is the control center for the entire body. Acupuncture
points lie along meridians, channels of increased electromagnetic energy that
overlap key areas of the nervous system. Needling these points stimulates
the release of organic chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain.
Some of these chemicals decrease pain while others trigger the endocrine system to release the appropriate hormones that in turn, influence the bodies own internal regulating system.
Therefore, Acupuncture is a mechanism for returning the body to homeostasis (balance). The improved energy and biochemical balancing produced by Acupuncture stimulates the body's natural healing abilities for the overall effect of increased physical and emotional well-being.
“Qi” – The Universal Energy
There is a universal life energy called Qi present in every living
creature. This energy circulates throughout the body along specific pathways
that are called meridians. As long as this energy flows freely throughout
the meridians, health is maintained, but once the flow of energy is blocked,
the system is disrupted and pain and illness occur. Acupuncture works to “re-program” and
restore normal functions by stimulating certain points on the meridians in
order to utilize the Qi of the body to promote health and balance.
Ancient Taoist Philosophy
Traditional Chinese Medicine has its origin in ancient Taoist philosophy which
views a person as an energy system in which body and mind are unified, each influencing
and balancing the other. The medicine is the longest continually practiced medicine
in the world - 3000 plus years and the fastest growing health care system in
America today.
Holistic Approach
Unlike allopathic medicine which attempts to isolate and separate a disease
from a person, Chinese Medicine emphasizes a holistic approach that treats
the whole person. Traditional Chinese methods of healing are excellent tools
for maintaining optimum health and preventing illness. It is effective for
physical, psychological and emotional problems.
Harmony and Balance
Herbal medicines are designed to normalize the bodies functioning and restore
harmony to the constitution. They are prescribed for each person specifically
for their constitution and imbalance. Medicinal herbal therapy works with acupuncture
by providing the nourishing support for the energetic “re-programming” and “re-balancing” efforts
of acupuncture.
